Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic Tree Planting and Nursery Manager to lead our ambitious reforestation and biodiversity projects on the ground. As the Tree Planting and Nursery Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of our tree nurseries and lead large-scale planting efforts across diverse terrains in rural Cameroon. Your role is pivotal in ensuring the success of our reforestation projects, from the propagation of seedlings to the strategic planting and nurturing of trees that will revitalize landscapes and support local ecosystems.

This position will require frequent travel to project sites globally.

Tasks amp; Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Direct and inspire a dedicated team of 30 to 50 local staff, fostering a culture of teamwork, respect, and professional growth. Your leadership will be the cornerstone of our project's success, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Nursery Management: Oversee the operation of our tree nurseries, ensuring optimal growth conditions for a wide variety of native and beneficial tree species. Your expertise will guide the propagation, care, and preparation of seedlings for planting.
  • Project Planning and Execution: Develop and implement detailed planting strategies that align with environmental goals and community needs. You will organize and lead planting activities, ensuring each tree is given the best start in its new environment.
  • Community Engagement: Work closely with local communities to understand their needs and how our projects can support sustainable development. Your role will involve educating and involving community members in planting efforts, fostering a sense of ownership and participation.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly assess the health and growth of planted areas and nurseries, making adjustments to care and management practices as needed. Your keen eye for detail will help us measure the impact of our work and guide future projects.
  • Resource Management: Efficiently manage resources, including tools, materials, and finances, ensuring projects are delivered within budget and resources are used sustainably.
  • Safety and Training: Champion a safe working environment, implementing best practices for nursery and fieldwork safety. You will also be responsible for training your team, enhancing their skills in nursery management, tree planting, and maintenance techniques.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in forestry, horticulture, or a related field, with a strong background in nursery management and tree planting.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with experience managing large teams, preferably in a rural or community-based setting.
  • A hands-on approach to problem-solving and project management.
  • Excellent communication skills, with fluency in English and French;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with communities, team members, and external stakeholders.
  • A passion for environmental conservation and sustainable development.
